- External Flash - Consider Using a Diffuser to lessen the harsh shadows when taking pictures of people or objects.
- DSLR - A camera with manual controls, high ISO, burst shooting abilities and with the ability to shoot in RAW will work the best.
- Lens - You want to look for a lens that has image stabilisation, vibration reduction and an aperture below f/2.8.
- Remote Shutter Release - A remote should help to eliminate any shake when you press the shutter release.
- Tripod - A tripod is an essential for long exposures and to steady your camera & reduce shake.

- Use a large aperture.
- Slow down the shutter speed.
- Use an off camera flash.
- Use your cameras exposure compensation capability.
- Shine a light on your subject and auto focus on that, then turn off and take the picture.
- Turn up your ISO as much as you need.
- If using a flash bounce the light off a wall to help reduce harsh shadows.
- Motion blur can look good - experiment with this.
- Make sure image stabilisation is on.
- If you make a mistake don't worry! You can learn from it.
- Hand-held shots should be no more than 1/60th of a second.
